The club was formed in 1995. Following on from an upsurge in interest in the sport at a junior level, Plymouth had been operating with teams in the national league since the early 1990's, but it had done so with no clear administrative structure. The teams in the early part of that decade, on the men's side in particular, were made up of personnel from Plymouth University and the College of St Mark and St John. At this time there were some top quality players operating in the City, but clearly the squad could only be seen as transient.
Sponsorship had been responsible for a growing interest amongst the junior ranks and after local competition had been arranged at this level it only seemed right to enter competition at first a regional and then national level. The club therefore sprang up initially based on the needs of the younger players. Fortunately, coaches like Steve Bashford and Steve Church who were both also senior players, saw the possibility of forming a club structure which would encompass all ages of player across the City.
Since the club came into being both men's and women's volleyball has grown apace. The men won the senior regional title in 2001 with a squad of players containing several of the players who won the national under 15 title in 1997 (true home grown talent). The ladies, although not yet having taken the regional title, have appeared in the championship finals on 2 occasions. Both teams now operate in division 3 of the national league and clearly the potential is there to play at a higher level.
